Anthem of the seas - the good

Many of you have read and commented on my recent post on the Anthem of the Seas, and I appreciate all the feedback. 

Overall, we all have to realize that everything is subjective and each individuals level of adaptation to a cruise that isn’t going entirely as planned is going to be different. For example, someone that booked the cruise with the intention of participating in all the various bar trivia, enjoying the casino, playing bingo, and shopping my not even have noticed or felt the effects of the missing panels on deck 14. On the other hand, someone that booked this ship in the winter specifically because they had an indoor pool area, puzzle room, flying trapeze class, and North Star might be a little more frustrated. To someone that has been on many RC cruises in the past, the Flowrider, rock wall, etc might be old news by now and therefore wouldn’t affect you.

We personally booked this ship because it seemed like there were so many activities available during the colder sea days. And now, the fun part! I really am a big kid at heart, and I was right in line with them to try all the fun activities. 

Once things opened up again, the amenities did provide a truly unique experience at sea. Here is the highlight video of all the fun things on board!

Anthem of the Seas - The forgotten Cruise

Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard about the terrible storm the Anthem of the seas drove through the week of the February 7th sailing. The story was a headline on mainstream media the entire week as the cruise limped back to the Bayonne NJ port, the coast guard waiting to inspect the ship. I’m not here to tell you about that storm. I’m here to tell you about the forgotten passengers, those of us on the very next sailing that left February 13th. 

In the week leading up to departure, we were all unsure that our sailing was even on. We received no e-mail, phone call, etc from Royal Caribbean acknowledging the incident. Any information we learned of our upcoming cruise came from the news, or even the cruise critic message boards. The morning of departure, we were extremely relieved to board the ship, assuming that Royal Caribbean had time to get everything in order for our sailing. My husband Brian and I went to our stateroom, and were even more relieved to see it was clean, no signs at all that there had been anything wrong the week prior.

Remember me? A little update

Hey! Remember me? I've been doing some serious slacking on blogging lately, but the good news is it's mostly because I've been too busy working out and planning my 2016 travel!

Here's a little look at what I've been up too...

The pretty running trail that I haven't gotten to use much lately...

Not much running. With the winter weather and dark mornings here in NJ, I haven't had much motivation to get out there lately. I have hit the treadmill a few times this month, and I'm gonna try to maintain 15 miles a week throughout the winter, or until I find a race to train for, whichever comes first...

Rock Climbing - I absolutely love everything about indoor climbing in the winter. It's a great workout - both physically from climbing and mentally from figuring out the routes, and the people are really friendly. I can't wait to try outdoor climbing for the first time once it gets warm out.

Yoga - I've been going to a local yoga studio twice a week since the summer and I've really noticed a great improvement in my flexibility. It's also an awesome stress reliever, and i'm debating on adding some more Yoga into my life.

P90X3 the Challenge - Pull-up push-up day

P90X3 - I always do the first round and then kinda fall off the wagon. This time Brian is doing it with me, and having a workout buddy always helps keep us accountable. 

Fitness Summary: My cardio has definitely been suffering for a few months, but strength wise I'm the strongest I have ever been thanks to the Workout/Climbing/Yoga combination. I hope when race season rolls around, all the cross training translates into PR-ville!

And... Some more fun stuff to share!

1. I got a fitbit!! I know this is not earth shattering news and many of you already have Fitbit's or Garmin watches, or some other form of exercise band. But, it's really cool to finally see how active I am on a daily basis, and since it's a charge HR, I can also see how many "active minutes" I have with an elevated heart rate. Expect a review post to come shortly.

2. I also got a new GoPro - the Hero 4 session. Since this camera is waterproof without a case, the sound quality has greatly improved and the new light weight design makes it much easier to record non shaky video. So, you can expect 2016 to be the year of some Vlogging! 

3. And, I've saved the best for last, what's happening on the travel front? We're going a cruise! And not just any cruise, one of the newest, largest, ships that currently exists, Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the seas! 

After our Peru Debacle back in August, we wanted to get away but didn't want the hassle of dealing with tour companies, long flights, or trying to fit too much into my 2 weeks vacation allowance per year. So, we booked this cruise since it leaves right out of Bayonne NJ, which basically takes any hassle right out of the mix. It goes to Port Canaveral and the Bahamas, so not the most exotic of locations, but we are looking forward to having a relaxing trip after doing some intense exploring over the past few years.

The good news is I still have 8 vacation days left this year, so we are currently plotting our second trip... California is high on the possibilities list, with a Half Dome hike as the highlight!

That's all for now, but expect to start seeing more regular posts now that I'm back at it.
