5 Fitness Trends I haven't tried.... Yet

obstacle racing. Have you tried?
I'm once again linking up to the Friday Five hosted by Cynthia of "You signed up for what" , Courtney of Eat Pray Run DC, and Mar from Mar on the run. Be sure to check out their blogs and the other blogs on the link up!

I thought I would chime in this week because I love today's fun topic " 5 fitness trends you'd never try" and I can't wait to read what the other bloggers have to say.

The word “never” is a funny thing. When I was a freshman in high school, I gave track a try. I was coming from a life of fast food and TV watching, and my very first lap around the track didn't go too well. It was a brisk day, I was slow, out of breath, and the cold air filled my chest right away, making me feel like crap. I quit after the first practice and said I would never be a runner. Fast forward to the last 3 years of my life and i've not only become a runner, but I ran the NYC half last year, something I NEVER in a million years thought I would do back then.

The moral of the story, never say never!

These days, I live for new & different experiences, my motto being :

"Don't knock it until you've tried it, and then tried it again."

Many of the things I've done are on other people's "never" list - skydiving, ice climbing, surfing, sleeping in an ice hotel, etc... I like to push myself as far out of my comfort zone as possible, and rarely use the word "never" in present day life.

Now that i've gotten that out of the way, here's the fun part. My list in meme:

 1. Zumba

This is probably how it would go...
I've heard this class is a ton of fun, but it doesn't seem to make my to do list. I think it's because this is a cardio based workout and I get my cardio in with P90X3 and running currently. I also am not a huge fan of dancing... gasp!

2. Pole Dancing class

Agreed, now let's advertise it this way as well!
I've actually seen some pretty cool pictures of these classes where women are using the pole to do side inversions and things that take a lot of strength, balance, and technique. But, I feel this class has a long way to go to be taken seriously, as many of the ads I see still have women in bra and underwear on the pole, which sadly takes away from any fitness focus this class may have. It may be fun for a bachlorette party, but it's not on my to do list for fitness just yet.

3. Those body wrap things

I kid, I kid... sorta
This is the one thing I'm pretty confident in saying I don't intend to try. I don't believe you can just throw a wrap on your stomach and grow abs without putting in some serious diet and exercise as well, so I probably wouldn't invest the time or money into it.

4. Fad Diets, Performance enhancement drugs, weight loss pills,
                                                      etc...

Picture not related, just funny

Anddd this is the other thing that can probably get real close to the never category. No other explanation really needed...

5. Ultra Marathons

Serious power to anyone reading this that has run one of these. After struggling with the half marathon distance, I'm not sure a marathon is anywhere in my near future, let alone an ultra. I hope this gets on my radar someday as my endurance grows, but in my present state it is a very, very long way off.

So there you have it.  Would love to hear your opinions on this one! For anyone that currently does anything i’ve mentioned above (except number 4), convince me to try it!

Or, what is it that keeps a particular activity in the "never" category for you? Let me know! I especially want to hear from the people that say obstacle racing, since I was once against this until I gave it a try, and now i’m hooked…

    1. Right? Maybe if they changed the way it was advertised, I would give it a little more consideration...

  2. I am tired of seeing people selling those wraps on instagram. Some folks post pictures of wraps everyday. I should probably figure out how to delete them...lol

    1. Completely agree. I usually try to give a follow back to everyone on Instagram, but I think I need to start drawing the line with the wrap people...

  3. I actually bought some of those wraps... like months ... never tried them yet. I want to see if something will smooth out my cellulite skin - at least for an hour :) haha

You're right thought - I always said I would NEVER run... & then started at 37 yrs old & now have 6 half marathons under my belt :)

    1. Haha you will have to let me know if you try them. I would love to hear if they actually work! And yes it's amazing what we find ourselves doing in life that we never thought was possible. Congrats on your half's and have a great weekend!

    1. I think it really does look like a great workout, I just wish they would ditch the bra, underwear, and stiletto ads that take away from it. I would love to hear your opinion on the class if you try it! Have a great weekend!

  5. I can only imagine how silly that I would look doing Zumba and dancing isn't my thing either. I totally agree about the wraps. They aren't some magical fix. I really don't understand the obsession.

    1. Haha yes I'm sure I would look ridiculous trying to do Zumba, probably hiding in the back of the class... I could do with never seeing a wrap ad ever again. Have a great weekend!

  6. I said never to an ultra and then did a 6 hour run (we got in 33 miles) and it was really fun. It is such a different vibe than a traditional race. You kind of have to roll with it and go for distance not time. That said, at the time, I had completed 35+ marathons so... there is that. I am so with you on the wraps, poles and zumba. My list had crossfit/paleo, barre, intermittent fasting, barefoot running and obstacle races.

    1. Wow, congrats on the ultra and 35+ marathons! That's am amazing accomplishment! I've only been running for a little over 2 years and since I do all sorts of other workouts as well I'm not always good at being consistent. I know my running endurance just isn't there yet for an ultra right now, but like I said, never say never, so maybe some day! Have a great weekend!

  7. I'll join you in skipping all these. I've tried Zumba, but I spent too much time figuring out what I was supposed to be doing and not enough time doing it!

    1. I'm pretty sure that Zumba would go exactly the same way for me hahaha. I'm so bad at that type of stuff! Have a great weekend!

  8. Haha, I"m so uncoordinated that if I did Zumba or Pole Dancing, I'd be a meme or a viral video...

    1. Hah! I would be right there with you! I'm so uncoordinated with dance moves it's not even funny! Have a great weekend!

  9. Yeah, pass on the pole dancing. So many pictures I've seen makes it look as if you share your pole in a class. Awkward! I'm finally trying the marathon distance this year. I love the half distance, so we'll see how this works out...

    1. The germaphobe in me is horrified at the idea of sharing a pole.... Good luck with your marathon!

  10. Yes to ALL of these! I definitely wouldn't ever say never to everything but there are a few things I wouldn't even consider.

  11. Years ago I fell in love with the marathon distance and rarely raced in any other distances, and even ran one 50-mile ultra. Due to a an injury, these days I can't run those kinds of distances, but I'm grateful that I can still run and now embrace shorter distances. My advice for running a marathon? Do it if you get that fire in your belly that makes you really want to train for and run that distance. If it's not there, don't force it.

I won't be trying Zumba anytime soon because I have two left feet!

    1. Wow! Congrats on completing a 50 mile ultra. That's an insane amount of miles. As of right now, I don't have any immediate plans to train for a full marathon. I love to workout but like to try a variety of different things, so I'm not quite ready to commit the time to marathon training. But hopefully someday!

  12. I first I thought I would never try an ultra , but I'm considering a 50K (30 miler) sometime in the future (not soon ahah).

  13. Good luck on your ultra! It's funny how sometimes we end up doing things we never thought we'd try... That's why I say never say never! Have a great weekend!
