The Great Pyramids of Giza are high on many people’s bucket list, but, tell the average American your traveling to Egypt and you will likely be met with comments like “it’s not safe,” “right now is a bad time” , and a general “why.”
Well, i’m here to tell you two things. First, Brian and I felt completely safe the entire time we visited the pyramids. The people were extremely kind and went out of their way to ensure we were happy and enjoying our short stay. And two - Yes, it is entirely possible to see the pyramids while only in Egypt on a layover!
In fact, if you are serious about seeing the pyramids in your lifetime, now is the time to go! The country is still recovering from the events of the past few years, and unfortunately many tourists are still worried about visiting. Which means that If you decide to go now, you can have all the famous attractions almost to yourself. Imagine all the great photos you will get without the crowds!
We had a 10 hour flight layover on our way to Dubai, and this was more than enough time to see the pyramids, Sphinx, and probably even see more of Cairo. We opted for a private tour with Memphis tours, and were met with a company representative at the airport.
He walked us right up to the visa counter, which was empty since there aren’t many tourists currently, and in less than a minute we paid the $25 fee and were issued our visa. There was no paperwork to fill out and it couldn’t be easier!
We were then driven (with free wifi in our vehicle) to the pyramids through Cairo, which took a little under an hour, and spent the remainder of our time enjoying this sight while getting background information from our guide.
The pictures really tell the rest of the story:
|The planks we had to walk on to get inside the small pyramid|

After we spent a few hours at the pyramids and got all our pictures, we were dropped back off at the airport safe and sound by our guide, with plenty of time to spare until our flight. I highly recommend seeing the pyramids sooner rather than later, they will not disappoint!
