Dubai desert dune buggy & sand boarding adventure

Dubai may be filling up with malls and high rises over the last 10 years, however, if you venture just a few minutes beyond the city center you will be surrounded by sand dunes.

There are two main ways to see the desert:

Desert Safari - this consists of being driven by a bus, or for the slightly more adventurous, in a 4x4 vehicle over the dunes themselves, called dune bashing, to a desert camp. The camp is complete with restroom facilities as well as a full service restaurant that will feed you a traditional meal while watching the sunset. While there, you can also take part in a variety of activities ranging from a camel ride, holding a falcon, henna painting, sand boarding (depending on tour operator) and even taking your pictures in traditional garb.

While we were in Dubai, we had decided to take a hop on hop off bus tour which came with a free sunset desert safari, but were driven there in the big red bus itself.

Great Pyramids of Giza on a layover

Great Pyramids of Giza

The Great Pyramids of Giza are high on many people’s bucket list, but, tell the average American your traveling to Egypt and you will likely be met with comments like “it’s not safe,” “right now is a bad time” , and a general “why.”

Well, i’m here to tell you two things. First, Brian and I felt completely safe the entire time we visited the pyramids. The people were extremely kind and went out of their way to ensure we were happy and enjoying our short stay. And two - Yes, it is entirely possible to see the pyramids while only in Egypt on a layover!

Winter Obstacle Races: There is no off season!

Winter can be rough for runners. Many either hit the treadmill, lay off the mileage, or train through the darkness, cold, ice and snow for spring races. Having 3 months with no race in sight can be depressing, but, thanks to some winter obstacle races that have been popping up over last couple of years, there is no more off season! The best part is, the races feature mud instead of snow, so you won't even have to worry about getting dirty!

Dubai Mall: How to spend your day

Dubai loves to break records, and the Dubai mall tops the list for over the top attractions. We visited this mall multiple times during our week stay in the UAE for various attractions, and there are still corridors we missed!

In retrospect, you could spend an entire day exploring this mall and still won’t get bored. Planning a bit in advance goes a long way, as these record breaking attractions get crowded!

Ski Dubai

Ski Dubai... where do I start? Located in the famous Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai is an indoor ski hill winter wonderland created in 2005 as part of Dubai’s initiative to make everything extreme - bigger, faster, taller, etc - you name it they have thought of it!
